The construction of the Moth Light Rig

Page 6 -- Special Notes

1

Assemble your rig. Start by setting your buckets up about 5 feet apart.

2

Insert the two legs into the 1.25" pipes cemented into the buckets.

3

Gently insert the crossbar into the 2 Tee connectors on top of the legs.

4

Attach the light fixture, with bulbs in place

5

Make a mark on the two legs approximately 1 inch below the bottom of the light fixture.

6

Disassemble the rig.

7

With a drill, drill a hole through each leg where you marked it.

8

Thread the .25" strong rope through the one of the holes and knot one end so it is secure and cannot be pulled through.

9

Reasseble the rig, and ad the leg extenders. Use a gentle twisting motion to seat the legs and crossbar. Ensure that the legs are upright and the buckets are spaced exactly the width of the crossbar.

10

Thread the rope through the second hole and knot to hold in place.

11

Drape the sheet over the rope, and insert the sheet weight tubes. Drag the sheet outwards from the rig to form an "A" shape.

12

Your Moth Light Rig is ready for field trials.

Special Note

I have found that the rig is very stable and takes about 10 minutes to field assemble. However if there is a wind blowing you may want to not use the leg extenders, but instead simply insert the legs directly into the bucket holders. This make the rig much shorter, but it doesn't sway in the wind and it still works quite effectively. I use the leg extenders only on breezeless nights. On breezy nights I shorten the sheet on both sides and will often times roll up one side very short and place it on top of the buckets so that the breeze can not flap the sheet. You will have to experiment with what works best for you.
